Special Projects

One of the challenges faced by St Leonard's Hill Residents Committee, as with so many things, is money and the level of contributions from residents. We spend considerable amounts of energy encouraging residents to contribute, which many kindly do. In 2023, we launched payment through PayPal and debit/credit cards to make it easier to make a payment avoiding our well intentioned residents who forget to pay.

We are constantly reviewing the state of the hill gathering quotes to fix and prioritising based on affordability and use. We have quotes for:

  • Repairing the section of the road outside Stone Mountain for £12,600
  • Section outside Castle Peep for £18.700 - the damage here requires full reconstruction which is why it is so expensive.
  • There are a couple of other areas of the Hill which need attention and which would cost £14,800 to resurface.
  • In addition to this we have the ongoing costs of pothole repairs etc etc every year.

At the end of this financial year (March 31st 2023) we will have some £3,000 of uncommitted cash in the bank. If our Spring 2023 fundraising goes well we might generate £12,000-13,000. Pothole repairs cost around £3,500 per annum.

Clearly, the SLHRA Committee are very aware of the work that needs to be done. We may have some difficult choices to make this year which could, for example, include postponing all resurfacing work until 2024 so that we then have enough cash to pay for at least one of these expensive sections of the Hill.

Completed: The gate

You may have noticed that the gate at the entrance of St Leonard’s Hill  was  rotting ,  unsightly and had become dangerous. Whilst it no longer serves it’s original purpose which was to define St Leonard’s Hill as a private road by a one day annual  closure , it does add a degree of identification to the entrance and is an historic feature.

Completed works:
New Drainage Gulley

A number of years ago the lower part of St Leonards Hill used to flood. The SLHRA committee undertook a project to install a new gulley to avoid floods during rainfall
